Founded February 25, 1847, 59 days after Iowa became a state, the University of Iowa classes started in 1855.  In those days, Iowa city was the state capitol.  When the capitol was moved to Des Moines in 1857, the Old Capitol became the first permanent "home" of the University.

Herky the Hawk, nearly a half century ago Dick Spenser '43 spending an afternoon in the university's Museum of Natural History, he studied a hawk, produced a couple of lifelike sketches, and--as an afterthought--he drew a caricature of a grinning bird, waving one wing and wearing an Iowa sweater. A cross between Woody Woodpecker and a bald eagle, the cartoon  gained the university's endorsement.   The name Herky came from a contest won by John Franklin of Belle Plaine., nearly a half century ago Dick Spenser '43 spending an afternoon in the university's Museum of Natural History, he studied a hawk, produced a couple of lifelike sketches, and--as an afterthought--he drew a caricature of a grinning bird, waving one wing and wearing an Iowa sweater. On six or seven days each year, all roads in the state seem to lead to Iowa City. And all roads in Iowa City lead to Kinnick Stadium. During those special days, on the crisp winds of fall, with blue skys, and beautiful leaves adorning the trees, the Iowa Hawkeyes take the field and Kinnick Stadium is filled with the sounds of more than 74,000 Hawkeye fans.

"This is a wonderful setting for college football. There's a great deal of enthusiasm for it. People are kind and gentle, and they enjoy their football and they applaud their team. It is indeed the only game in town on an autumn afternoon." KEITH JACKSON ABC Sports

Sports Illustrated once featured Brian DeCoster's  school bus.  The bus has long since been replaced by a trailer made from a row planter from a mizzou farmer.
