In 1789, the year that George Washington became president of the new nation, that the University was chartered by the General Assembly. On October 12, 1793, the cornerstone was laid for a brick building on a hilltop near the center of the state
At the heart of campus stands the visual symbol of the University of North Carolina which for many years served as the sole water supply for Old East and Old West dormitories. In 1954 the well was given brick walks, plantings, and benches. Students can bring good luck with a drink from the Old Well on the first day of classes.
What is a Tar Heel?
One version of the nickname's origin has the name first being applied to North
Carolinians during the Civil War. They fought like their heels were stuck to the defensive
position with tar.
