California University of California tailgaters have it all, scenic beauty, a great tradition and old fashoned spirit. The university was the product of an 1868 merger between the College of California (a private institution in Oakland) and the Agricultural, Mining, and Mechanical Arts College (a land grant institution). The C of C board of trustees augmented the college's Oakland holdings with the purchase of 160 acres of land four miles north, on a site they named Berkeley in 1866. Here it is today. The Campus is set in the hills overlooking San Francisco Bay.
The gates and tower are famous.
On game day the Acacias have a tailgate party on their front porch.
The days of the radicals are long gone as the Cal students are among the nations best.
Script California is one band tradition. Another is when they parade from Memorial Stadium through the campus and streets of Berkeley after a home football game. On the way, the Band passes by Bowles Hall, a gothic, all-male residence hall, stops, and plays "By" for the Bowlesmen, who have adopted the tune of "By" for their own "Bowles Hall Drinking Song." Memorial Stadium is one of America's finest and holds almost 72,000 fans.. |
