Rutgers The Birthplace of College Football
Rutgers, , the nation's 8th oldest college, got it's start as Colonial College in 1766. The name Rutgers came from a Revolutionary War figure, Col. Henry Rutgers, in 1825. Kirkpatrick ChapelThe Chapel, a non-denominational facility, remains very special to the Rutgers Community. It hosts Wedding Ceremonies of ANY Faith (including Civil & Inter-Faith) plus baptisms and concerts. Rutgers Community members only may reserve the Chapel for Memorial Services.
Tailgaters arrive early and set up elaborate gatherings.
Hot dogs and cheerleaders are there too! Rutgers University and its neighbor, Princeton, played the first game of intercollegiate football on Nov. 6, 1869, on a plot of ground where the present-day Rutgers gymnasium now stands in New Brunswick, N.J. Rutgers won that first game, 6-4. The new stadium was built in 1994 and is a world class facility.
